Gold doesnโ€™t solve every problem. But right now, it would solve most of mine.

Money is becoming a recurring issue. Spells cost gold. Food costs gold. Staying alive costs gold.

With that in mind, I checked the local inn in Riverwood for work. They had a bounty available and pointed me toward a few other opportunities. None of them sounded safe. All of them sounded necessary.

I added everything to the list.

The Road to Whiterun

On the way to Whiterun, I spotted a fight in progress. A giant. Several people. A lot of shouting.

I hadnโ€™t decided who to help by the time the giant was already dead.

That earned me a mild scolding for not joining in sooner. Turns out the group were the Companions. They take jobs. Dangerous ones. For gold.

I made a mental note. I may need them.

As they left, I noticed something else. Crops. A lot of crops. Vegetables everywhere. Unattended. Unclaimed. No warnings. No angry NPC dialogue.

I harvested all of it.

I then walked past the farmer who owned those crops.

Heโ€™s in for a surprise.

Whiterun Business

Once inside Whiterun, I went straight to the inn. More work was available. One job stood out.

I was asked to retrieve something called Nettlebane.

I donโ€™t know what it is. I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s a weapon. But it sounds valuable enough to investigate.

From there, I spoke to the Jarl.

He asked if I could help his court wizard, Farengar. I handed over the Dragonstone. Apparently, Iโ€™d already done the hard part.

As a reward, the Jarl offered me the chance to buy a house in Whiterun.

Buy being the key word.

The Western Watchtower

A dragon had been sighted at the Western Watchtower.

I was asked if I could help.

I agreed, reluctantly.

The dragon stayed just out of spell range most of the fight. When I could hit it, I did. When I couldnโ€™t, I waited and tried not to die.

I need better spells. That means gold. Farengar already suggested Winterhold.

No.

  1. Iโ€™m an Argonian.
  2. The clue is in the name: Winterhold.

An Unexpected Title

The dragon fell.

I took what I could from it. Then I absorbed its soul.

A Whiterun guard called me Dragonborn.

I donโ€™t know what that means.

But Iโ€™m confident theyโ€™ve got the wrong Argonian.

Stranded: A Minecraft Survival Diary โ€“ Log 1: Sheep, Skeletons, and a 3ร—3 Start

Stranded โ€“ Log 1: Sheep, Skeletons, and a 3ร—3 Start

Game: Minecraft
Platform: Steam Deck
Mode: Survival
Difficulty: Hard

I spawn in a wooded area, right next to sheep. That immediately solves one very important problem.

A bed.

All I need is three pieces of wool of the same colour. Minecraft is very picky about that.

I punch a tree, grab enough wood to get started, and craft a table so I can make a wooden axe and pickaxe. When I turn back, the sheep have vanished.

Of course they have.

It takes longer than Iโ€™d like, but eventually I track down three sheep of the same colour. Three sheep later, I have enough wool for a bed.

That alone changes everything. Being able to skip nights means I donโ€™t have to deal with monsters until I decide Iโ€™m ready.

Big Ideas, Bad Timing

With the bed sorted, my thoughts immediately jump ahead.

I want a base of operations. Somewhere I can sleep, store things, and eventually start a farm. From there, I can mine properly instead of poking holes in the ground and hoping for the best.

I wander into a nearby cave. Not deep โ€” maybe ten or twenty blocks.

I see a skeleton.

The skeleton sees me.

An arrow hits me almost immediately, followed by another. Hard difficulty is not interested in easing me in.

Iโ€™m not equipped for this, and Iโ€™m not throwing the run away on day one.

I run.

Ignoring the Lesson

A little later, I try again.

This time, itโ€™s because I spot coal. Torches would be useful, and optimism briefly wins out over common sense.

The skeleton is still there. It now has a creeper for company.

At this point, even I take the hint.

I cut my losses and leave the cave alone.

Some problems are better solved later.

Surface Coal and a Nightโ€™s Rest

Itโ€™s not all bad.

Across the water, I spot coal exposed on the surface. A decent amount of it, too.

No skeletons. No creepers. No arrows flying out of the dark.

Itโ€™s getting late, so I carve out a small alcove, place my bed, and sleep.

Day one ends without disaster, which feels like an achievement in itself.

Day Two: Follow the Water

I wake up with no real plan.

Rather than force one, I decide to see where the water leads.

I start swimming, then remember boats exist and immediately regret not thinking of that sooner.

I make a boat and quickly realise itโ€™s going to take some practice to steer properly.

Still, it does the job.

After a bit of travel, I find a flat area right next to the water. Trees nearby. Sand close enough to grab.

This feels like somewhere I could actually stay.

A House, Barely

I gather wood, grass, and some sand. I want windows eventually, even if they donโ€™t happen today.

I also start nudging the water around slightly, laying the groundwork for a future wheat farm.

For now, though, the priority is simple.

I build a small 3ร—3 structure out of wooden planks. No windows. No decoration.

But it has a door.

That alone means I can come and go without breaking blocks every time, which already feels like progress.

Itโ€™s not much, but itโ€™s mine.

Ending the Day

During my wandering, Iโ€™ve picked up some meat and a bit of copper ore.

I craft a furnace, cook the meat, and leave the copper smelting while I sleep.

Iโ€™ve no idea what day three will bring.

But I have a bed, a door, food sorted, and a place I can stand still without worrying.

On Hard difficulty, thatโ€™s more than enough for now.

Difficulty: Adept (possibly dropping to Apprentice)

I could pick any race. I always pick Argonian. Some habits donโ€™t need explaining.

Iโ€™m calling this run Cold-Blooded, which feels slightly unfair for an Argonian. But if the game insists on freezing me, Iโ€™m leaning into the theme.

Difficulty is set to Adept. That may change. Iโ€™m here to survive, not impress the weather.

Helgen (Skipped on Video, Not Skipped in Reality)

I didnโ€™t record the wagon ride, the dragon, or the escape from Helgen. Survival Mode doesnโ€™t matter until youโ€™re out of the cave and the cold starts applying pressure.

I followed Hadvar through Helgen, grabbed what made sense, and moved on.

Once Survival Mode became available, I switched it on. At that point, the run was live.

Hadvarโ€™s Advice and Immediate Doubts

Hadvar suggested we split up on the way to Riverwood.

We then took the same path.

He also suggested I join the Imperials. They did try to execute me earlier, so Iโ€™m undecided.

Mage Stone First, Because I Have Priorities

I detoured for the Mage Stone. If Iโ€™m going to struggle, I want my magic skills levelling efficiently while it happens.

From there, I headed straight for Embershard Mine.

Embershard Mine: Cold Prep in a Dark Hole

There was someone waiting outside. I dealt with that first.

Inside, I somehow avoided alerting the bandits after triggering their trap. Iโ€™m not calling it skill.

I cleared the mine carefully. Not stealth-archer careful. Mage careful.

The key find was fur armour. As an Argonian, warmth matters more than looks.

Loot was otherwise forgettable, but I did gain a level.

Riverwood: Familiar Faces, Familiar Problems

I reached Riverwood not long after Hadvar.

I spoke to the trader and learned about a stolen Golden Claw.

The thief ran off to Bleak Falls Barrow.

I donโ€™t like the name. I like the location even less.

Apparently Iโ€™m Family Now

After speaking with Hadvarโ€™s uncle, I was asked to warn the Jarl in Whiterun.

I was also told I could take food.

Not the bow. That stayed put.

Nightfall and a Sensible Call

I sold a dagger, watched the light fade, and chose not to push my luck.

Night meant colder temperatures and no margin for mistakes.

I returned to Hadvarโ€™s family home and rested there.

Level-up went into Health and Destruction.

It feels strange to still be here.

I didnโ€™t expect this run to last. Not on Interloper. But five days in, Iโ€™m still upright, still moving, still counting small victories like they matter. Because they do.

Todayโ€™s plan was simple. Move carefully. Take what the map allows. Donโ€™t get greedy.

The ice had other ideas.

Island Hopping

I crossed the ice toward the fishing cabins, step by deliberate step.

A suitcase had washed up after the blizzard. Thick ice this time, thankfully. I checked it anyway.

Nothing useful.

No camera. No reason to carry film. I left it behind.

The first island paid out better.

A birch sapling.

That means one arrow someday. Not many. Just one. Enough to keep the idea alive.

The second island followed up with a maple sapling.

The bow dream didnโ€™t die today.

The cabins themselves were empty. No surprises. No correction to the balance.

Cooking for Progress

I lit a fire and cooked the rabbit.

I added anything else I could justify, not out of hunger, but for experience. Cooking skill still hasnโ€™t hit level two, which feels wrong given how much time Iโ€™ve spent staring at fires.

Interloper doesnโ€™t reward effort. Only outcomes.

When the fire burned down, I pulled a torch and moved on.

The River Remembers

I followed the river. The same one that ended the last run.

Cattails lined the banks. I took every one.

A deer carcass lay ahead. I considered committing to it. Wind killed that idea quickly.

I took one kilo of meat.

Greed gets you killed. Iโ€™ve learned that lesson already.

At the bridge it finally clicked.

The Ravine is close.

Mystery Lake is no longer theoretical.

Not today, though. Not like this.

Tea and Repairs

I diverted to the Train Unloading trailer.

Herbal tea.

I was happier about that than I should admit.

I made another fire in the nearby tunnel. Cooked what I could. Boiled water. Prepared teas.

I repaired my windbreaker jacket. Again.

Itโ€™s holding together out of spite at this point.

The bow is getting closer. I know better than to expect miracles, but I can already feel the disappointment waiting.

Calling It

I broke my rule and ate before bed so I could read a sewing book.

Once it got too dark, I stepped outside to keep reading.

The weather answered immediately.

I didnโ€™t wait to confirm if it was a blizzard.

I went back inside.

Herbal tea. Sleep.

Tomorrow, the Ravine.

And maybe, if the debt hasnโ€™t come due yet, a heavy hammer.

The Long Dark โ€“ Stalker Instinct Log #3: Turns Out I Was Already Armed

Difficulty: Stalker
Region: Mystery Lake

The day started well. I sat down at the crafting table to work on my bow, settled in, got into a rhythmโ€ฆ and realised I hadnโ€™t hit record. Rookie mistake. Iโ€™d only lost about an hour of crafting, so I chalked it up as a warning shot from the universe.

As punishment, I stopped crafting and went outside. The bow could wait.

The Bow I Forgot I Owned

I grabbed some beef jerky and immediately spotted something I had somehow missed the day before: arrows. Several of them. Right next to them? A bow.

In my excitement during the last log, Iโ€™d completely overlooked the fact I already had a functional weapon setup. No crafting required. I took the bow, checked the arrows, and headed straight out to see what my snares had been up to.

Two rabbits, caught cleanly. I reset the snares, started a fire, and immediately had it refuse to light. One match gone, no progress.

Quick reminder for anyone new to this:

  • Light a torch first
  • Use the torch to start fires
  • Save matches for when you actually need them

Food cooked. Water sorted. Crisis avoided.

Exploring Mystery Lake (The Hard Way)

With supplies handled, I decided to explore more of Mystery Lake. I knew there had to be another way down besides the rope, and I was determined to find it.

I did. Eventually.

It cost me a sprained wrist and ankle, but I had bandages and painkillers to spare. No panic. Once I got my bearings and realised Iโ€™d hit the transition toward Forlorn Muskeg, I made the call to head for Trapperโ€™s Homestead.

Worst case, I lose some daylight. Best case, I find better clothing.

Crafting Progress (And Future Problems)

No luck on the clothing front, but the trip wasnโ€™t wasted. While there, I crafted a rabbitskin hat. Not glamorous, but effective.

Next target:

  • Rabbitskin mittens

I dropped another snare nearby. No rabbits in sight, but thatโ€™s future meโ€™s problem.

I also made a point of staying outside as much as possible. Cabin fever will become an issue eventually, and Iโ€™m not interested in speeding that up.

Threats on the Horizon

Two long-term concerns are now officially on my list:

  • Cabin fever โ€“ managed for now by not living indoors
  • Scurvy โ€“ temporarily covered by stored food, but fishing will be needed

Fishing is unavoidable. Itโ€™s just a matter of when.

Stalker Reality Check

Three logs in, and Stalker hasnโ€™t been the nightmare I expected. I genuinely thought Iโ€™d be tripping over wolves every time I stepped outside.

That hasnโ€™t happened. Yet.

The tension is there. The margin for error is thinner. But so far, it feels manageable โ€” and more importantly, enjoyable.

That probably means the game is waiting.

With Pipe Dreams in the rear-view mirror, itโ€™s a well-earned day off for Frank. Today? Itโ€™s all about Red. Heโ€™s got the boundless energy of a puppy on caffeine and the mud-crawling tenacity ofโ€ฆ well, a Scout whoโ€™s tired of being second-best.

The target? The wooden bridge task. Along the way, I spot a trailer Red thinks he can handle. He canโ€™t. But youโ€™ve got to admire the ambition.

We reach the bridge and, of course, it needs wooden planks. Frankโ€™s domain. But Redโ€™s not doneโ€”he also picks up a SnowRunner throttle upgrade (one for himself and one for Scout). Naturally, Red gets the install. Scout remains benched.

๐ŸŒŠ Mud Wrestling and Watchtower Glory

Tempted to spoil Red with more upgrades, I decide to hold off. Then he earns them. Charging through deep mud and water, Red smashes through the terrain to grab another Watchtower like a tiny, determined hero.

Back to the garage we goโ€”Red gets a roof rack for longer hauls and, most importantly, a tyre upgrade. Thatโ€™s right: better grip, less slipping, and maximum mud-mashing potential. Watch out, Frank.

Now itโ€™s Frankโ€™s turn. Time to deliver those wooden planks and make that bridge a reality. He follows the same route Red scouted earlier, proving why heโ€™s still the heavy-lifting king.

  • Bridge? Built.
  • Frank? Effective as ever.
  • Red? Flexing in the garage.
  • Scout? Still patiently waiting for relevance.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Pipe Dreams and Permadeath Nightmares

Itโ€™s Day 6, and I decide itโ€™s time to tackle Pipe Dreamโ€”a task that demands the delivery of three items, one of which is a heavy fuel semi-trailer. Thatโ€™s the heaviest thing Iโ€™ve hauled to date, and Iโ€™m not about to go in blind.

So, I hop into Red to scout the route. Unfortunately, coming down from the Watchtower, Red seems to channel Scoutโ€™s spirit. And by that, I mean he flips. Again. Thankfully, nothing too seriousโ€”just a bit of an involuntary nap on his side before getting back on track.

After giving the route a once-over, I park Red somewhere out of the way but within reach. Just in case.


๐Ÿฆพ Frank the Certified Beast

Next up, I jump into Frank and take him back to the garage to slap on the Saddle High. With that done, itโ€™s off to retrieve the trailer.

Now, this is the moment Frank becomes โ€œCertified Beast.โ€
On nothing but his starter wheels, AWD, and diff lock, he hauls that massive trailer from the fuel station to the factory without complaint. One minor reverse maneuver was all it took to get around a tricky bitโ€”otherwise, he made it look easy.


๐Ÿงฑ Bricks, Beams, and Boulder Brawls

With the big job done, the rest felt like a cool-down lap. Bricks? Metal beams? No problem.

Exceptโ€ฆ Frank met his match today. And no, not in the form of water or mudโ€”stones.
Big ones. The kind that wedge themselves under your bumper and whisper, โ€œYouโ€™re not going anywhere, mate.โ€
More than once, I thought I was going to need Red to bail him out. But each time, it was just a matter of nudging past a rock or repositioning. Still, it’s clear: if I want to take Frank into deeper terrainโ€”especially waterโ€”I need to raise his suspension and upgrade those tyres.


๐Ÿ”ง Whatโ€™s Next?

With Pipe Dream in the rear-view mirror, I took a look at the map. Most remaining tasks are on other maps, but thereโ€™s still a wooden bridge in Black River that needs some attention.

Thatโ€™s a job for tomorrow.

Today belongs to Frank.
Heโ€™s earned a breakโ€”and maybe a reward. Or at the very least, a long-overdue tyre upgrade.

What is Customloper?

Morning Discoveries: Maxโ€™s Last Stand

Todayโ€™s goal was simple: reach the Camp Office without becoming a wolfโ€™s breakfast. Thatโ€™s really the only bar for success these days. On the way, I spotted one of The Long Darkโ€™s most reliable signals that something is worth investigating: birds circling in the sky, waiting patiently for either my demise or someone elseโ€™s.

Luck was on my side for once โ€” it wasnโ€™t my turn. At Maxโ€™s Last Stand, a corpse lay frozen in place, and right beside it sat the holy grail of early-game weaponry: a Survival Bow. I snatched it up with the speed and enthusiasm of a raccoon finding a half-eaten cheeseburger.

All I needed now were arrows. With them, I could finally graduate from โ€œrock-throwing medieval PE teacherโ€ to โ€œslightly competent hunter.โ€

Deadfall + Hypothermia = Great Life Choices

Feeling pretty pleased with myself, I decided to swing by the Deadfall area. Thatโ€™s when my overconfidence caught up with me. The temperature dropped faster than my optimism during an Interloper run, and I was soon staring at the dreaded red text: Hypothermia.

I lit a fire in the nearby stove, boiled some water, and cookedโ€ฆ something. Iโ€™d like to say it was a hearty stew, but given my supplies, it was probably just porridge or whatever counted as โ€œhot foodโ€ in my pack. Once I had a bit of warmth and hydration, I grabbed a torch from the fire and pressed on toward my main goal.

Lesson learned: Interloper weather waits for no one, especially those who think they can โ€œjust pop overโ€ somewhere.

Camp Office and Instant Regret

The rest of the walk to Camp Office was blissfully uneventful โ€” a rare thing in Mystery Lake. Inside, I scored a skillet and cooking pot. Not exactly a rifle or a quiver of arrows, but after yesterdayโ€™s cooking pot debacle, I wasnโ€™t about to complain.

Then I made the fatal mistake: I decided to โ€œjust explore the areaโ€ before settling in. First came the snow. Then came the blizzard. In minutes, visibility dropped to โ€œguess and hopeโ€ territory. Navigation became a mix of scent, instinct, and blind luck.

Somehow โ€” and I truly do not know how โ€” I managed to stagger back to the Camp Office without being eaten, freezing to death, or wandering onto thin ice. The blizzard roared outside as I slammed the door shut, my heart still hammering.

Evening Wrap-Up

Back inside, I set about cooking more porridge, boiling as much water as I could, and letting my core temperature crawl back to something survivable. The bow was now mine. The arrows? Still a distant dream. But tomorrow, Iโ€™d change that.

Find arrows. Or a rifle. Or, failing that, a pointy stick and a really bad attitude.

A Day in the Life of Frank

We begin the day staring down a literal Road Block. It wants two service parts from the warehouse. No problem. This is Frank’s moment. The Fleestar rolls out, collects the goods, and delivers them without so much as a grumble. Road cleared. Mission done. Easy.

With the path open, Red (our sprightly little Scout 800) heads out and uncovers another Watchtower. A little more map, a little more potential chaos.


Wet Harvest, Maximum Effort

With more of the map visible, I queue up Wet Harvest. Itโ€™s a multi-stage farm delivery runโ€”only one truck is suited to the task. You guessed it: Frank is back in action.

First stop, the warehouse. We grab some bricks and discover they also stock metal beamsโ€”very handy intel for future tasks. Bricks get dropped off at the farm without incident.

Frank heads home for a well-earned breather, some repairs, and a small upgrade: a raised exhaust pipe. Itโ€™s not glamorous, but it keeps the engine breathing when the terrain gets swampy.


Wood, Metal, and a Promotion

Next, weโ€™re off to the lumber mill for wood. Frank makes the pickup and hauls it straight back to the farm. No drama. Just dependable grunt work.

Finally, we collect metal beams from the warehouse. One last delivery and the Wet Harvest task is officially in the rear-view mirror.

And with that, we hit Rank 4. Not bad for a dayโ€™s work. Frankโ€™s still in one piece, Redโ€™s scouting strong, and the map keeps growing.
