Cold winds, a dragon attack, and no meat from wolves? My Skyrim survival journey has officially begun. I chose the Argonian life, followed Hadvar through Helgen, and cleared out Embershard Mine with a mishmash of magic, mace, and misfired arrows. Survival Mode’s no joke—I’m freezing, starving, and seriously questioning those wolves’ loot tables.

I took my first dusty steps into ARK: Scorched Earth on easy mode—and let’s just say it didn’t go as planned. There were bushes to punch, shirts to accidentally mass-produce, and a doedicurus with a very personal vendetta.

Kicking off my Voyageur playthrough of The Long Dark on Nintendo Switch, I found myself dropped into the icy isolation of Desolation Point. Between dodging wolves, scavenging for supplies, and discovering that boats are only useful when not frozen solid, it was a classic first day in the apocalypse. My Day 1 in ARK: Survival Evolved on The Island began with the classic survival starter pack: confusion, panic, and punching a tree with my bare hands. From crafting a questionable cloth shirt to accidentally angering a dilophosaur, this first day was all about learning the hard way — mostly through trial, error, and mildly heroic fleeing.
