The Three Strikes Rule – Alien: Isolation Permadeath Setup

The Three Strikes Rule – Alien: Isolation Permadeath Setup

Applies to: Isolation Protocol – An Alien Isolation Survival Diary (Nintendo Switch)

Simple, brutal, honest: the Alien may kill me up to three times across the entire run. On the third Alien death, the diary ends. Any other cause of death is instant game over.

Why this rule?

  • Alien terror stays front and centre. The Xenomorph is the star; the rule frames the whole run around it.
  • High tension without fluke wipes. You can survive a few Alien “learning moments,” but you can’t coast.
  • Crystal-clear stakes for readers. Everyone knows the count: Alien deaths (0/3). Anything else? Lights out.

The Rule (TL;DR)

  1. Three Alien deaths total. The Xenomorph may kill you up to three times across the whole playthrough.
  2. Third Alien death = run over. There is no fourth. The diary ends immediately.
  3. Any other death = instant game over. Humans, Working Joes, fire, falling, explosions — one and done.

How deaths are counted

  • Alien kills: Any lethal Alien animation (tail, lunge, vent yank) increments the Alien death tally by one.
  • Non-Alien deaths: Immediate series end. Note cause and sign off the run.
  • Scripted fail states: Don’t count as Alien deaths unless killed by the Alien during the sequence.
  • Reload honesty: If the Alien killed you, it counts — even if you hard-quit. Record it.

Saving & honesty policy

  • Emergency save stations only. Use them whenever available (Switch: Hold A at the phone).
  • No save scumming to dodge a tally. If a lethal Alien kill occurred, increment the count.
  • Death log: Note mission/area and cause (e.g., “Alien death 2/3 — Tech Support vent grab”).

What counts / doesn’t count

  • Counts toward the 3: Any lethal Xenomorph kill animation.
  • Ends the run immediately: Human gunfire, Working Joe execution, environmental (falls, fire, explosion), suffocation, etc.
  • Non-lethal Alien encounters: No tally if you survive (e.g., it investigates but doesn’t kill).

Suggested difficulty & assists

Difficulty: Medium (series standard).
Accessibility: Tweak visuals (motion blur/film grain) to preference. These don’t affect the rule—only your heartbeat.

Examples

  • A: Alien drops from vent and tail-stabs you. Alien death 1/3.
  • B: Working Joe chokehold kills you. Immediate game over (not counted toward the 3).
  • C: You panic-sprint, trip a human patrol, get shot. Immediate game over.
  • D: Alien yanks you from a locker late game. Alien death 3/3 → run ends right here.

How it appears in the diary

  • Each log header shows the current tally: Alien deaths: 0/3, 1/3, 2/3, or 3/3 (RUN ENDED).
  • Footers link back to this page so new readers understand the stakes.
  • Major deaths get a one-line post note (mission, cause, takeaway).
